What is STEM and PLTW?
I. LEARNER PROFILE
This module will be designed with Horry County Administration Teams (Principals, Vice Principals, and Curriculum Coaches) in mind. The age range of these targeted learners is vast, and that must be kept in mind when planning instruction. The level of experience among my learners is vast as well. Some learners are seasoned veterans whereas some are new to their positions. One thing they all have in common is their newfound interest in STEM Education. As my targeted learners are currently busy with the opening of schools in these uncertain times, instruction will not be provided until October/November.
II. INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT
For this module, learners will be learning about the concepts STEM Education and Horry County Schools’ STEM Curriculum, Project Lead The Way (PLTW). The Essential Questions developed for this module is, “What is STEM Education?” and “What is PLTW?”
This content was selected because there was an evident need for the disbursement of this information. Teachers are wondering what we are going to be doing, and how we should be planning for this year. The same holds true for STEM Educators.
The idea for this development came to me after a conversation with my school’s curriculum coach. Now, I do not want this to be taken the wrong way, but during our conversation about how to start the school year it was stated that, “I mean, I don’t even know what it is that you do in STEM”. This was not stated in a negative or mean tone. It was sincere. After this conversation I spoke with other STEM teachers from across the district, and they believe their curriculum coaches are in the same situation. It is not that they do not want to help us, they are just not familiar with our curriculum or what it is that we do.
STEM Education is new to Horry County Schools at the Elementary level. It was introduced last year, the Fall of 2019, and was somewhat cut short due to the closing of schools in March. Administration and Curriculum Coaches did not have a lot of time to observe STEM classrooms, and were never formally explained the concepts of PLTW’s curriculum.
After having a conversation with my supervisor, (Meaghan Quillen- Horry County Schools: Digital Integration Specialist), we decided that presenting to administration/ curriculum coaches about STEM and PLTW would be beneficial to everyone involved.
As far as the actual outline of the learning module/ session, we are not sure. We plan to revisit and construct a more detailed plan mid-September. We thought it would be more productive to let the school year start and chaos calm down since my targeted learners are currently dealing with a lot of factors in preparation for the opening of schools.

III. MEDIA ASSETS / DEPLOYMENT
As large gatherings are not currently encouraged, an in person session will not be likely. I am currently considering two means of content disbursement. One option would be to host a live virtual meeting such as a Google Meet. The other option would be to create pre-recorded sessions and distribute them through Google classroom for learners to view at their own pace. I like the option of a live session better, because it would provide real time feedback for my leaners questions. However, both options are currently still being considered.
IV. ASSESSMENT
I currently do not have an assessment. This will be forthcoming after other factors are determined.
